El Abra is the farm where Jose Marti went awaiting deportation to Spain. Marti had been incarcerated on October 21, 1869, when he was only 16 years old by the Spanish militia in Havana. On March of 1870 he was sentenced to six years of hard labor in prison. His mother, after much begging, was able to persuade the authorities to exchange the sentence to deportation. On August of 1870 Marti was transferred to La Cabaña, another fortress/prison in Havana, and on October 13 eventually sent to Isla de Pinos. He returned to Havana on December and early on 1871 he was deported to Spain. |
