The Municipio of Melena del Sur is one of the twenty six municipios in the province of Havana, Cuba. It is located to the south, at the middle of the province. This municipio covers a surface of 389 square kilometers. To the east borders with the municipios of Güines and San Nicolás; to the north with San José de las Lajas; to the northeast with San Antonio de las Vegas; and to the west with Batabanó. To the south the Gulf of Batabanó.

Note: A “municipio” (plural: municipios) is the first political division of the provinces in Cuba. It is similar, in many ways, to the county or parish in which a state is divided in the United States.

December 20, 1913, the Municipio of Melena del Sur was re-established and in 1920 some of its barrios were segregated to create the Municipio of San Antonio de las Vegas. In 1940 it was part of the judicial circuit (partido judicial) and the fiscal district (distrito fiscal) of Güines.
