Originally called Hoyo Colorado, the city of Bauta was founded in 1750* on the land of the Hato Ariguanabo, next to La Pastora lagoon, on the side of the Camino Real de Vuelta Abajo (the road that joined Havana with Pinar del Río and later served as the foundation for the Carretera Central). It is recorded, dating back to 1688, that there was a small church in the location where the city was constructed. |
During the Cuban Independence Wars, the city of Bauta was burned down and the seat of the Municipio had to be transferred to Punta Brava. After the Republic was established, in 1902, the seat was brought back to Bauta. |
Note: * In some references the date of founding appears as 1850. |
