Municipio of Viñales

The Municipio of Viñales is one of the fifteen municipios in the province of Pinar del Río, Cuba. This municipio covers a surface of 741 square kilometers.


Note: A "municipio" (plural: municipios) is the first political division of the provinces in Cuba. It is similar, in many ways, to the county or parish in which a state is divided in the United States.


This municipio is located towards the north central of Pinar del Río's province. To the east it borders with the municipios of Consolación del Norte and Consolación del Sur. The Municipio of Pinar del Río is to the south and west. The Gulf of Mexico washes Viñales' northern coast.

Population: The population of this municipio in 1953 was 15,950 persons.

Jurisdiction: City Hall was created January 1, 1879. During the First American Military Occupation of Cuba (1899-1902) the Municipio of Baja was deleted, its barrios added to those of Viñales and Pinar del Río. In 1940 the Municipio of Viñales was part of the judicial party of Consolación del Sur and the fiscal zone of Pinar del Río.

Barrios: The "barrios" (singular: barrio) are similar to the electoral districts in which a county is divided in the United Sates.


The barrios of Viñales in 1943 were: Albino, Ancón, Cayos de San Felipe, Cuajaní, Laguna de Piedra, Malas Aguas, Merceditas, Playuelas, Pueblo, Puerto Esperanza, Rosario, San Cayetano, Santa Fe, Santo Tomás, San Vicente and Yayal.


Albino: This barrio in 1943 had a population of 806 persons.


Ancón: In 1943 the population of this barrio was 501 persons.


Cayos de San Felipe: In 1943 it had a population of 361 persons. It is located eighteen kilometers from the municipio's seat of government.


Cuajaní: Its population in 1943 was 1,405 persons. It is located two and a half kilometers from the municipio's seat of government.


Laguna de Piedra: In 1943 its population was 1,690 persons. It is located six kilometers from the municipio's seat of government.


Malas Aguas: In 1943 had a population of 1,159 persons. It is located forty kilometers to the northwest of the municipio's seat of government. The town of Malas Aguas is located in this barrio.


Merceditas: In 1943 had a population of 503 persons. It is located fourteen kilometers from the municipio's seat of government.


Playuelas: In 1943 it had a population of 881 persons. It is twenty six kilometers from the city of Viñales. The town of Playuelas is located in this barrio.


Pueblo: Viñales, the municipio's seat of government.


Puerto Esperanza: In 1943 had a population of 1,791 persons. It is located twenty four kilometers from the municipio's seat of government. The town of Puerto Esperanza, or La Esperanza, is located in this barrio.


Rosario: In 1943 its population was 1,624 persons. This barrio is located twenty eight kilometers from the city of Viñales.


San Cayetano: In 1943 had a population of 1,729 persons. This barrio is located twenty six kilometers north of the city of Viñales. The town of San Cayetano is located in this barrio.


Santa Fe: In 1943 its population was 468 persons. It is located five kilometers from the municipio's seat of government.


Santo Tomás: Its population in 1943 was 413 persons. This barrio is located sixteen kilometers north of the city of Viñales.


San Vicente (de los Baños): In 1943 had a population of 725 persons. It is located six kilometers north of the city of Viñales.


Yayal: In 1943 had a population of 462 persons. It is located seven kilometers from the municipio's seat of government.
