The Municipio of Consolación del Sur is one of the fifteen municipios in the province of Pinar del Río, Cuba. This municipio covers a surface of 1,209 square kilometers. To the east it limits with the Municipio of Los Palacios; to the north with the municipios of Consolación del Norte and Viñales; and to the west with the Municipio of Pinar del Río. Its southern limits are the shores of the Gulf of Batabanó. |
Note: A "municipio" (plural: municipios) is the first political division of the provinces in Cuba. It is similar, in many ways, to the county or parish in which a state is divided in the United States. |
Jurisdiction: The Municipio of Consolación del Sur was established July 1, 1866. In 1902 the municipios of San Diego de los Baños and Julián Díaz were annexed to its territory. In 1940 Consolación del Sur was judicial circuit (partido judicial) and fiscal zone (zona fiscal). |
Catholic patron saint: Our Lady of Candlemas (Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria) |
Population: Consolación del Sur has been the second most populated municipio in Pinar del Río since 1887. According to the census of that year its population was 26,645 people. The War of Independence (which became the Spanish American War when the United States joined) depleted the population in this region of Cuba considerably, as can be seen in the drop in the census of 1899. By 1953 the population of this municipio was 50,915 persons. |
