Municipio of Pinar del Río

The Municipio of Pinar del Río is one of the fifteen municipios in the province of Pinar del Río, Cuba. This municipio covers a surface of 1,548 square kilometers.


Note: A "municipio" (plural: municipios) is the first political division of the provinces in Cuba. It is similar, in many ways, to the county or parish in which a state is divided in the United States.


This municipio is located towards the center of Pinar del Río's province, having access to the sea on the north and south. To the west it borders with the municipios of Mantua, Guane, San Juan y Martínez and San Luis. The municipios of Viñales and Consolación del Sur are to the east.

Population: The population of this municipio in 1953 was 93,195 persons.

Jurisdiction: City Hall was created in 1859 (according to Dollero, 1921: the 1st of January 1860, although the city of Pinar del Río was founded in 1571 and registered in 1699). During the First American Military Occupation of Cuba (1899-1902) the Municipio of Baja was deleted, its barrios added to those of Viñales and Pinar del Río. In 1940 the Municipio of Pinar del Río was judicial party and the fiscal zone.

Barrios: The "barrios" (singular: barrio) in Cuba are similar to the electoral districts in which a county is divided in the United Sates.


The barrios of Pinar del Río in 1943 were: Cabezas, Cangre, Gramales, Guayabo, Isabel María, Marcos Vázquez, Matahambre, Nombre de Dios, Paso Viejo, Primero de Ovas, Primero de Taironas, Primero Norte, Primero Sur, Punta de Palma, Quemados de Pineda, Río Feo, Río Sequito, San José, Segundo de Ovas, Segundo de Taironas, Segundo Norte, Segundo Sur and Sumidero.


Cabezas: In 1943 this barrio had a population of 1,222 persons. Includes the towns of Cabezas and Mulo.


Cangre: It had a population of 4,987 persons in 1943; at that time it was a kilometer from the city of Pinar del Río.


Gramales: In 1943 it had 1,288 persons. It is located thirty two kilometers from the city of Pinar del Río.


Guayabo: In 1943 this barrio had a population of 1,486 persons. It is located ten kilometers from the city of Pinar del Río.


Isabel María: Its population in 1943 was 1,120 persons. It is located sixteen kilometers from the city of Pinar del Río. Includes the town of Isabel María.


Marcos Vázquez: This barrio had a population of 1,730 persons in 1943. It is located sixteen kilometers from the city of Pinar del Río.


Matahambre: The population of this barrio in 1943 was 5,525 persons. It is located towards the north of the municipio. Includes the town and the mines of Minas de Matahambre.


Nombre de Dios: This barrio in 1943 had a population of 2,243 persons. It is located sixty four kilometers from the city of Pinar del Río. Includes the town of Nombre de Dios.


Paso Viejo: This barrio in 1943 had a population of 3,567 persons. It is located twelve kilometers from the city of Pinar del Río.


Primero de Ovas: In 1943 this barrio had 3,177 persons. It is located ten kilometers from the city of Pinar del Río. Includes the town of Las Ovas.


Primero de Taironas: In 1943 had a population of 2,214 people.


Primero Norte: Part of the city of Pinar del Río.


Primero Sur: Part of the city of Pinar del Río.


Punta de Palma: In 1943 it had a population of 791 persons. It is located thirty six kilometers from the city of Pinar del Río.


Quemados de Pineda: This barrio in 1943 had a population of 4,707 persons.


Río Feo: In 1943 had a population of 2,232 persons. It is located eight kilometers from the city of Pinar del Río.


Río Sequito: This barrio had a population of 3,886 persons en 1943; at that time it was a kilometer from the city of Pinar del Río.


San José: This barrio in 1943 had a population of 3,437 persons; at that time it was a kilometer from the city of Pinar del Río.


Segundo de Ovas: In 1943 had 1,890 people.


Segundo de Taironas: Its population in 1943 was 3,548 persons.


Segundo Norte: Part of the city of Pinar del Río.


Segundo Sur: Part of the city of Pinar del Río.


Sumidero: In 1943 this barrio had a population of 1,760 persons. It is located eighteen kilometers from the city of Pinar del Río. Includes the town of Sumidero.

Cities, towns and places in the municipio: Cabezas, Isabel María, Las Ovas, Minas de Matahambre, Minas de Santa Lucia, Mulo, Nombre de Dios, Peña Blanca, Pinar del Río, Río del Medio, Sumidero.


Cabezas: Town in the barrio by its name. The 1943 census registered 161 people; the one of 1931 had registered 216 people. It is located on the road from Pinar del Río and Guane.


Isabel María: Town in the barrio by its name. In 1943 it had 309 people.


Las Ovas: Town in the barrio of Primero de Ovas. The census of 1931 registered 350 people, in 1943 it had dropped to 282 people.


Minas de Matahambre: Town in the barrio of Matahambre. In 1931 had a population of 1,357 people, and in 1943 it had increased to 2,670 people.


Minas de Santa Lucia: Town in this municipio. In 1943 it had 451 people.


Mulo: Town in the Cabezas barrio.


Nombre de Dios: Town in the barrio by its name. In 1863 it had 6 houses and 19 residents; in addition there were other residents and homes spread out on the tobacco plantations by the river. In 1943 the census registered 246 people, where as in 1931 it had 224.


Peña Blanca: Town in this municipio.


Pinar del Río: Seat of government of the province and this municipio.


Río del Medio: Town in the Nombre de Dios barrio. It is located next to the Río del Medio marina. In 1943 it had 312 people.


Sumidero: Town in the barrio by its name. This town was founded in 1897. According to the census in 1931 it had 203 people, dropping to 160 people in 1943.
