Municipio of Pinar del Río |
The Municipio of Pinar del Río is one of the fifteen municipios in the province of Pinar del Río, Cuba. This municipio covers a surface of 1,548 square kilometers. |
Note: A "municipio" (plural: municipios) is the first political division of the provinces in Cuba. It is similar, in many ways, to the county or parish in which a state is divided in the United States. |
This municipio is located towards the center of Pinar del Río's province, having access to the sea on the north and south. To the west it borders with the municipios of Mantua, Guane, San Juan y Martínez and San Luis. The municipios of Viñales and Consolación del Sur are to the east. |

Jurisdiction: City Hall was created in 1859 (according to Dollero, 1921: the 1st of January 1860, although the city of Pinar del Río was founded in 1571 and registered in 1699). During the First American Military Occupation of Cuba (1899-1902) the Municipio of Baja was deleted, its barrios added to those of Viñales and Pinar del Río. In 1940 the Municipio of Pinar del Río was judicial party and the fiscal zone. |
